Eating the Same Food Builds Trust and Rapport: Insights from Key Studies

Building rapport with a new boss or on a first date? A surprisingly effective, often overlooked strategy: share the same food. A series of rigorous experiments by psychologists highlights this simple yet powerful dynamic.

In the first study, participants were paired with strangers for an investment game. Each received funds to entrust to their partner, who—as the 'fund manager'—would invest it (guaranteed to double) and decide how much, if any, to return. Pairs given the same candy shared more freely, investing significantly higher amounts than those with different snacks.

A follow-up study examined food's role in labor negotiations. Pairs eating similar foods reached agreements nearly twice as fast as those with dissimilar choices, underscoring food's subtle influence on collaboration.
