Flammkuchen, with its wafer-thin dough base reminiscent of pizza, has been a beloved German favorite for years and is now sweeping Dutch supermarket shelves. As experts in Alsatian cuisine from Vins d'Alsace, we've perfected this traditional recipe for you to recreate at home with ease and authenticity.
Did you know? Originally, Flammkuchen tested the oven's heat before baking bread, ensuring no warmth was lost during preheat.

Ingredients
250 g flour
salt
(sunflower) oil
2 large onions, sliced
120 g bacon strips
20 g butter
100 g fromage blanc
100 ml crème fraîche
pepper
nutmeg
Instructions
Combine the flour, ½ tablespoon salt, ½ dl oil, and 1 tablespoon lukewarm water. Knead into a smooth dough and let it rest, covered, in a cool place for at least 1 hour. Melt the butter and gently sauté the onions until soft, without browning. Add the bacon strips. Mix the fromage blanc, crème fraîche, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
Preheat your oven to 280°C. Grease a baking tray and dust with flour. Roll or press the dough into a large round shape on the tray. Spread with the crème fraîche mixture, then top with onions and bacon. Drizzle lightly with oil. Bake for about 10 minutes until golden brown and crisp throughout.
Enjoy your meal!
