KFC Develops Plant-Based Fried Chicken Alternative, Targeting 2019 Launch

Vegetarian diets are gaining popularity, prompting even meat-heavy fast-food chains to innovate. KFC, renowned for its Original Recipe fried chicken, is reportedly creating a plant-based version that mimics the texture and flavor—replacing meat but retaining the brand's signature 11 herbs and spices. According to The New York Times, a KFC representative shared: "The new recipe is still in its infancy, which is why the tests that are carried out in our kitchens are still top secret. […] When the recipe is finished, we hope to be able to have it tested by our customers this year. If all goes well, we will launch this vegetarian option in 2019."

A Mixed Reaction from Fans and Vegetarians

UK restaurants are slated to trial this novelty first, though global rollout details remain undisclosed. Social media buzz on Twitter reveals divided opinions: Die-hard KFC fans decry it as an "abomination," imagining founder Colonel Sanders "turning in his grave." Vegetarians, however, express skepticism: "Don’t bother, no self-respecting vegetarian would eat at KFC" and "KFC is the most unhealthy fast food brand. I wouldn't even buy a vegetarian dish." This follows McDonald's successful "Grand Veggie" burger launch. Will this draw you back to KFC?
