Spice:cumin

Cumin makes your curry, couscous or sweet potato fries nice and spicy. In addition, this spice has many health benefits.

1. Rich in minerals
Just 4 grams of cumin provides 15% of the recommended daily amount of iron. Iron is important for your metabolism and oxygen transport in your blood. Cumin also contains manganese (7% per 4 grams), calcium (4% per 4 grams) and magnesium (3.8% per 4 grams). These minerals provide strong bones, energy and smooth muscles.

2. Stimulates your digestion Cumin stimulates the production of enzymes by your thyroid gland. These enzymes help with proper and rapid digestion. Cumin would work for both constipation and diarrhea.

3. Tasty seasoning Cumin is indispensable in the kitchen. For example, add crushed cumin to your coffee or use cumin seeds in a vegetable smoothie for an extra healthy touch. Tip:first soak the cumin seeds in a layer of water for about 10 minutes to get more flavour.

4. Gives your immune system a boost Cumin is an antioxidant. This means, among other things, that it helps and supports your immune system to fight off free radicals. These are aggressive substances that can damage your cells and tissue, increasing the risk of cancer.

Cultivate yourself You can easily grow cumin yourself. Sow in the open ground around May or June. Choose a sunny spot in the garden and water regularly. After a few weeks the plants are in bloom and the seeds are ripe in August. Rub the fruits of the plant to loosen the seeds and catch them. Tip:store a few seeds in a closed jar in a dark place. You can use these again next year in the garden.
