Classic Apple Crust: Timeless French Dessert from Larousse

Ingredients (Serves 4)
  • 4 large slices slightly stale country bread
  • 40g butter
  • 4 apples (Queen or Boskoop)
  • 60g powdered sugar
Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

  1. Butter the slices of bread on one side.
  2. Arrange them flat in a generously buttered ovenproof dish, unbuttered side down.
  3. Peel the apples and slice thinly, as for an apple pie.
  4. Layer apple slices over each bread slice, dust with powdered sugar, and add a second layer.
  5. Top with remaining sugar and dot with butter pieces.
  6. Bake in a hot oven at thermostat 7-8 (250°C) until golden and lightly caramelized.
