Surprisingly Delicious Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes: Easy, Healthy Side Dish

I’ve always enjoyed sweet potatoes, but standard fries left me unimpressed. Skeptical at first, I tried this slow cooker version at my partner’s request—loving slow cooker recipes as I do. The outcome? Incredibly tasty and worth repeating often!

Healthy and Flavorful Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes

Prep is quick, making this ideal for busy dinners when you want variety beyond potatoes, veggies, or meat. Serve alongside them—or blend into our slow cooker sweet potato soup. Recipe serves 4.

Ingredients for Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes

  • 1 kg sweet potatoes
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp cardamom
  • Agave syrup (or maple syrup), to taste
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
  • 200 ml orange juice
  • Pinch of salt

The orange juice and spices create a subtly sweet, irresistible flavor.

Step-by-Step Preparation

  • Peel sweet potatoes and cut into bite-sized cubes.
  • Blanch in boiling water (or Quooker) for 10 minutes.

  • Mix remaining ingredients in the slow cooker.
  • Drain potatoes, add to mixture, and stir.
  • Cook on high for 4 hours.

  • Stir midway to rotate cubes (optional).

Tip: Use a sharp knife—raw sweet potatoes are tough! Orange-fleshed ones are softer and easier to cut; paler varieties are firmer.

I rely on the WMF Grand Gourmet knife set: razor-sharp stainless steel with ergonomic handles, perfect for this task.
