Late-Night Snacking? Cottage Cheese Boosts Muscle Quality and Metabolism, FSU Study Shows

Craving a bedtime snack? Researchers at Florida State University recommend a protein-rich option like cottage cheese. Their study found that 30 grams of protein consumed 30 minutes before bed positively affects muscle quality, metabolism, and overall health—with no body fat gain for those skipping evening eats.

Active young women in their early 20s participated, eating cottage cheese 30 to 60 minutes before bed. The team examined its impact on metabolism and muscle recovery. This marks one of the first nutrition studies using whole foods rather than shakes or supplements.

"Until now, we assumed whole foods matched supplemental proteins, but lacked evidence," noted the researcher. "This builds on data showing whole foods perform equally well, expanding bedtime snack choices beyond powders and shakers."
