Renaissance Paintings Reveal Europeans' 500-Year Craving for Luxurious Foods

Our fascination with flavorful, exotic foods stretches back over 500 years. A detailed analysis of European paintings highlights meat, bread, salt, and sausages as the most common features in 16th-century depictions of meals.

This study reviewed 750 food-themed artworks from the last five centuries, zeroing in on 140 family meal scenes. Among the 36 Renaissance-era paintings, 86% featured bread, 61% showed meat, and just 22% included vegetables.

Curiously, the standout foods weren't everyday staples. Artichokes topped vegetables, lemons led fruits, and shellfish—often lobster—dominated meats, underscoring a preference for indulgence.
