Globally, 1.3 billion tons of food go to waste each year—a staggering statistic that demands action. That's where innovative grassroots efforts like The People’s Fridge come in. Spearheaded by committed British volunteers, this project successfully installed a community fridge in the heart of London. Drawing from established models in Spain, Germany, and other UK cities, it rescues surplus food from restaurants, markets, shops, and households, redistributing it free of charge to those who need it most.
Last August, The People's Fridge launched a crowdfunding campaign with a modest goal of €1,170. Within days, generous supporters propelled it to €2,660. On February 8, 2017, the fridge officially opened in Brixton's vibrant Pop Brixton space. Today, locals continue to donate fresh surplus, keeping it stocked for the community.
