Culinary trends evolve rapidly, each one distinct from the last. While purple foods are poised to dominate plates this year, charcoal-infused cooking may soon follow. The Telegraph highlights this emerging UK trend in a recent article.
In the UK, restaurants are embracing vegetable charcoal. At L'Enclume in Cartmel, chef Simon Rogan serves beef cooked in coal oil. In London's Shoreditch, bars craft innovative charcoal cocktails, such as an Old Fashioned with whisky, chamomile syrup, and charcoal. Supermarkets like Waitrose are joining in, offering a salmon and chia seed bagel made with charcoal-infused bread. Shelves also stock charcoal sesame biscuits and popular pressed charcoal juices.
Though trendy, is charcoal safe? Experts differ. Nutritionist Amelia Freer, speaking to The Telegraph, notes it accelerates toxin elimination and is gaining traction in detox routines. However, Charlotte Stirling-Reed advises caution: "Consult your GP before using charcoal supplements, as they can interfere with medication absorption and may not suit pregnant or breastfeeding women." Consume in moderation.
