Following the buzz around blue wine, blue coffee has arrived from Melbourne, Australia. At the vegan Matcha Mylkbar, the "Smurff latte" (aka Smurf latte) exploded in popularity after its Instagram debut. Fans raved: "So Cool", "When will it be available? I'm coming tomorrow!", "Can’t wait to taste it." Co-owner Nic Davidson shares, "It’s been crazy for a few days. Last weekend we sold over 100 lattes, and since our café only has 40 seats, that's a lot […] there are people who don't speak English who ordered it by showing us the picture on Instagram."
What makes it blue? It's brewed with coffee and a spoonful of blue-green algae powder—from salty seas or large lakes—loaded with vitamins, proteins, and iron. The full mix includes lemon, ginger, agave syrup, and coconut milk. On taste, Nic explains: "Before tasting it, people think it tastes like bubble gum. But it definitely tastes like agave and lemon. It's sweet and sour... But it's hard to explain, people perceive its flavor in different ways."
Matcha Mylkbar has crafted a full rainbow latte collection—think vibrant pink beet versions (shown below). Photos of this intriguing Smurff latte have us hooked, even if its flavor sparks debate.
