There's no cheese in it, is there?
Peanut butter originated in America, where it's simply called peanut butter. When it reached the Netherlands, however, it couldn't keep that name. Dutch regulations require products to have at least 80% milk fat to use the term 'butter' (boter).
Calvé, a leading food company, looked to 'leverkaas' (liver cheese)—a spread with neither liver nor cheese—for inspiration. They named their product 'pindakaas,' and the catchy term became a household favorite.
