What is mangosteen?

To clear up the misunderstanding right away:mangosteen has nothing to do with mango. It is a fruit, but it is not related to the mango.

Mangosteen is a tropical fruit from Southeast Asia with a thick skin and small segments of flesh. The taste resembles a combination of apple, lychee, grape and peach. The skin is edible and even very healthy. The skin does taste quite bitter. It contains a lot of xanthones, which are found in very few foods. Of the two hundred xanthones that exist, forty-three are in the mangosteen. According to the Journal of Pharmacology, these substances have a positive effect on the heart and blood vessels, your immune system and protect our cells and tissues because they are among the most powerful antioxidants found in nature.

Is mangosteen for sale in the Netherlands? Fresh mangosteen is expensive in the Netherlands and less fresh than in Asia, but you can buy the fruit in powder form. Delicious in a smoothie or in the batter of your pancakes.
