Easy Homemade Red Onion Chutney Recipe: Sweet, Tangy, and Healthier Than Store-Bought

Creating your own dips at home is incredibly simple, quick, and delivers superior flavor and nutrition compared to store-bought jars. Our tried-and-true red onion chutney is a must-try – perfect for cheese boards, charcuterie, or alongside your favorite meals.

Ingredients

For 1 jar

  • 400 g red onions
  • 100 ml red wine
  • 30 g brown sugar
  • 30 ml red wine vinegar
  • Splash of olive oil

Preparation

  • Peel the onions and slice into half rings. Combine them in a pan with the sugar, vinegar, red wine, olive oil, and 50 ml water. Bring to a boil, then simmer gently for 45 minutes.
  • Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning.
  • The chutney is done when the onions are meltingly soft and the liquid has fully reduced.
  • Transfer to a clean jar and allow to cool completely.

Tip 1: Prefer alcohol-free? Skip the red wine – it's nearly as delicious. Substitute with a splash of balsamic vinegar and extra water.

Tip 2: Store in a sterilized jar in the fridge for up to two weeks. For longer shelf life, follow proper preserving methods.
