While IKEA's Swedish meatballs are a beloved classic, you can easily recreate their juicy flavor and creamy sauce at home. As a home cooking enthusiast with years of perfecting European recipes, I've adapted this foolproof version for authentic results every time.
Ingredients for Meatballs
500g minced beef
250g minced pork
1 onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed or chopped
100g breadcrumbs
1 egg
5 tablespoons full-fat milk
salt and pepper
Ingredients for Sauce
dash of oil
40g butter
40g flour
150ml vegetable stock
150ml beef stock
150ml whipping cream
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Preparation
Step 1: Combine the minced beef and pork using your hands to evenly mix, incorporating larger chunks. Add the onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, and egg, mixing thoroughly. Stir in the milk and season generously with salt and pepper.
Step 2: Roll into small, round meatballs and place on a clean plate. Refrigerate for 2 hours to help them hold their shape during cooking.
Step 3: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the meatballs carefully and brown on all sides.
Step 4: Preheat oven to 180°C. Transfer meatballs to a baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes to keep them moist and tender.
Step 5: For the sauce, melt butter in a pan, stir in flour to form a roux. Gradually whisk in vegetable and beef stocks until smooth. Add cream, soy sauce, and mustard. Simmer gently until thickened.
Step 6: Serve meatballs with your favorite potatoes—fries, boiled, or mashed—for a comforting meal.
