While many Dutch people enjoy experimenting with new recipes and feel passionate about cooking, 20% lack confidence in the kitchen and want to get better. In total, 46% express a desire to enhance their skills, according to a Nutrition Center survey of over 1,500 respondents.
Nearly half (46%) rate their own cooking a solid 7 out of 10. Another 34% score themselves 8 or higher. However, 1 in 5 (20%) give themselves a 6 or lower—and 62% of this group wants to improve. Even among those rating themselves 7 or above, 42% seek further development.
Respondents average a 7.1 for their own skills but rate others at just 6.3. Over 15% deem fellow cooks' efforts insufficient. Common reasons for low self-scores include sticking to basics, poor early training, or simply disliking cooking. Yet, 62% of less-confident cooks are motivated to learn.
What can they actually do? Nearly everyone (99%) handles basics like pancakes, eggs, or traditional potato-vegetable-meat meals. Just 69% tackle international dishes, and 41% can create gourmet menus inspired by chefs like Jonnie Boer or Yotam Ottolenghi.
