The banana stands out as the go-to fruit for athletes across the Netherlands, beloved by people nationwide. According to the PLUS banana survey of over 1,000 Dutch respondents, seven in ten men and six in ten women report that bananas provide an energy boost during exercise. One in three even say they perform better after eating one.
However, misconceptions persist about banana calories. One in five Dutch people think ripe bananas have more calories than unripe ones. 'Nonsense,' says a registered dietitian. 'Riper bananas contain more short-chain carbs—or sugars—for quicker energy absorption, but calorie content remains similar.' A typical banana delivers about 120 calories, plus a substantial share of daily vitamins and minerals: 14% of potassium needs, 10% of magnesium, and 25% of vitamin B6.
Beyond sports, bananas enjoy widespread appeal—nine in ten Dutch people like them, and nearly one-third name it their favorite fruit. One in ten eats a banana daily, one in five can't imagine life without them, and seven in ten always keep them at home. They're a popular on-the-go snack for families, and for over 60% of babies, the banana is their first fruit.
How do Dutch eat their bananas? Trends like banana bread and smoothies are rising, and 77% see the fruit as versatile. Yet, 87% prefer eating it straight from the peel. Opinions split on ripeness: four in ten favor ripe bananas, while the same number prefer unripe ones.
