Avozilla: Australia's Giant Avocado Variety Averaging 1.2kg Now in Supermarkets

Avocados are everywhere these days—from art installations and a dedicated California museum to trendy proposal backdrops (with a side of soy sauce, perhaps?). If you're still avocado-obsessed, meet Avozilla. This nickname blends "avocado" and "Godzilla," aptly describing its massive size. Originating from South Africa and now thrilling Australian shoppers, this variety averages 1.2kg per fruit—offering about 20 servings and four times the size of a standard avocado. Australian wholesaler Mercer Mooney supplies it to supermarkets, with one employee reporting specimens exceeding 1.7kg.

4 Years of Growth

Ian Groves, the grower who helped bring this variety to life, says it tastes just like a regular avocado but with softer flesh that's perfect for spreading on toast. This is only his first harvest after securing authorization and fees from the South African developers. It takes four full years from planting to picking these ostrich egg-sized giants—and the payoff is sweet at €13 each. Who wouldn't be tempted by such a natural marvel?
