Why Refrigerating Champagne Long-Term Ruins Its Flavor: Expert Advice from Moët & Chandon

Champagne is a premium indulgence, so snapping up bottles on sale to stock up for birthdays or Christmas is a savvy move. However, one key mistake to avoid is prolonged refrigerator storage. Marie-Christine Osselin, Wine Quality & Communication Manager at renowned Champagne house Moët & Chandon, warns that it impacts flavor. “If you plan to drink your bottle of champagne (or sparkling wine) within 3-4 days of purchase, it should be placed in the refrigerator […] But if it stays in the fridge for several weeks, the cork can dry out due to lack of humidity,” she explains to The Huffington Post UK.

Keep Champagne Out of the Fridge Until Serving

What happens next? “When the cork dries out, the muzzle [metal part that attaches the cork to the bottle] relaxes and the champagne will oxidize more quickly, which changes its aromas,” Osselin continues. She recommends storing all sparkling wines in a cool, dark place with steady temperature until consumption. For serving chilled to perfection, place the bottle in a bucket with one-third water and ice for 15-20 minutes. “When serving, fill a third of the glass and hold the container by the stem so that the champagne does not heat up,” she adds.
