While not the most stylish accessory, the WearSens necklace represents a groundbreaking advancement in health tech. Worn around the neck during meals, it intelligently signals when you've had enough.
How does it work?
Developed by researchers at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), this cutting-edge device harnesses piezoelectric technology—the ability of certain materials to generate an electric charge in response to mechanical stress. Paired with a companion mobile app, it detects and analyzes vibrations in your neck from chewing and swallowing. Using your personal data like weight, height, and age, it calculates ideal portion sizes and alerts your phone when you've reached them, prompting you to switch activities.
It even identifies what you're eating!
The highly sensitive sensor distinguishes between foods and drinks based on unique vibration patterns from your jaw to esophagus. It can also detect temperature differences between hot and cold items.
Daily calorie tracking included
Beyond meals, WearSens monitors your daily calorie intake, warning if you've exceeded limits or overindulged in specific foods. Following promising internal tests, UCLA's prototype is now undergoing official validation for market approval.
This could transform eating habits—but would you wear it? Weigh in below.
