Kruidnoten vs. Pepernoten: Clearing Up the Sinterklaas Treat Confusion

Kruidnoten vs. Pepernoten: Clearing Up the Sinterklaas Treat Confusion

Sinterklaas is a cherished Dutch holiday, and no celebration is complete without those irresistible little treats. But are they kruidnoten or pepernoten? The names are often used interchangeably, yet there's a subtle distinction rooted in tradition.

Kruidnoten
These are the hard, round biscuits with a flat bottom, packed with warm speculaas spices for that authentic festive flavor.

Pepernoten
True pepernoten are irregular, dice-shaped gingerbread pieces that are slightly tougher. Historically made with pepper and other spices, modern versions often feature speculaas seasoning without the pepper.

Bakers and purists maintain this clear difference, but in everyday language, both are commonly called pepernoten. According to language authority Onze Taal and dictionary Van Dale, either term can apply to both shapes.
