Global wine production has reached its lowest point since 1961. Could our favorite drink soon face shortages?
The shortfall stems mainly from poor harvests in France, Spain, and Italy this year. Frost, drought, and forest fires have all played a role in disrupting yields. In Italy, output is down a full quarter from last year.
Across Europe, just four countries—Portugal, Romania, Hungary, and Austria—exceeded 2016 production levels. Changes elsewhere have been minor. Worldwide, total wine volume has fallen 8.2%.
