Kalettes:combination between kale and Brussels sprouts

When you think you know all vegetables, something new appears on the shelves. The special combination between kale and Brussels sprouts is popping up more and more in the Netherlands.

A UK grower has crossed kale and Brussels sprouts through hybridization. The result:kalettes. They look like small green with purple coals. The taste is slightly softer than the taste of Brussels sprouts and they contain more vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Kalettes are for sale in the Netherlands from October to March.

How do you prepare kalettes?

This can be done in several ways:

  1. Drizzle the kalettes with olive oil and roast them in the oven for 10 minutes.
  2. Sauté the kalettes in a large pan for 5 to 7 minutes. Cover the pan with a lid to make it softer.
  3. Grill the kalettes in a grill pan over medium heat for 10 minutes.
  4. Use kalettes raw in a salad to bring out the nutty flavor.
  5. Wok the kalettes for 2 to 3 minutes.
