While stamppot, licorice, and croquettes often define Dutch cuisine in our minds, there's far more to discover. Hellofresh's recent research uncovers the diverse staples in Dutch kitchen cupboards, blending global influences with everyday essentials. Beyond salt and pepper, staples like paprika powder (81.8%), cinnamon (81.5%), and sweet soy sauce (78.0%) are now fixtures in most homes, reflecting centuries-old trade routes and evolving tastes that enrich Dutch food culture.

The Iconic Four VOC Spices
At least half of Dutch households stock the historic 'VOC spices': black pepper (90.4%), cinnamon (81.5%), nutmeg or mace (59.4%), and cloves (52.1%). In sauces and seasonings, ketjap manis (78.0%) ranks high, surpassed only by mayonnaise (88.0%) and ketchup (81.4%).

Salt, Pepper, and Everyday Favorites
Salt (58.9%) and pepper (57.9%) top the list of dried herbs, used by many at least four times weekly. Paprika powder (44.6%), Italian or Provençal herbs (42.8%), and garlic powder (38.7%) follow closely as popular choices.

Fresh Garlic and Beyond
Fresh garlic (65.0%) leads fresh seasonings, gaining popularity through Dutch East Indies influences and Mediterranean cuisines. Curry powder appeals to over a third (37.4%), with three-quarters (74.8%) keeping it stocked.
