The chocolate-hazelnut spread is one of those indulgent treats we can't resist. In France, 2.7 kilos of Nutella are consumed every second, or about 1 million jars daily—far outpacing even our Italian neighbors, its creators. That irresistible chocolate-hazelnut flavor and melt-in-your-mouth creaminess keep us hooked. With hundreds of options now available, picking the best for taste and value is tough. Trusted consumer advocates at 60 Million Consumers magazine tested 14 top spreads (including store brands and organics) in their February 2020 issue to guide us.
Poulain, Choco Nussa, Super U—every detail was examined: fats used, flavor profiles, sugar, and fat levels. Key findings? Palm oil is yielding to healthier alternatives like sunflower, rapeseed, and coconut oils blended with cocoa butter. Nutritionally, though, it's sobering: averages hit 530 kcal per 100g, with experts noting a stark sugar-fat imbalance. Still, spreads remain a gourmet favorite.
The complete analysis is in the February 2020 issue of 60 Million Consumers.
