4 Proven Tips to Pick the Perfect Ripe Melon Every Time

Melons are at their peak this season—sweet, refreshing perfection for aperitifs, desserts, skewers, or paired with port. But selecting the right one can be tricky. A poorly chosen melon lacks flavor and disappoints.

Fortunately, drawing from years of hands-on experience and my grandmother's time-tested wisdom, here are 4 essential tips to choose a fresh, juicy, and delicious melon every single time.

4 Proven Tips to Pick the Perfect Ripe Melon Every Time

  • 1. Its weight
  • 2. Its netting
  • 3. Its smell
  • 4. Its skin

1. Its weight

At the same size, always choose the heaviest one. Compare weights with similar melons nearby. A heavier melon signals it's packed with sugars and intense flavor.

2. Its netting

It should have exactly 10 distinct slices—a clear indicator of exceptional sweetness. The net-like pattern separating these slices must be prominent and bluish-green in color.

3. Its smell

Sniff for a pleasant aroma that's not overpowering, as a too-strong scent suggests overripeness or rot. Check specifically at the "pécou"—the small stem end. Avoid the opposite end (the "nipple"). The stem should protrude slightly, confirming peak ripeness.

4. Its skin

The epidermis should feel firm—neither too hard nor too soft—but handle with care, as it's delicate. Avoid dropping it.
