Valentine's Day Trend: Dutch Couples Increasingly Celebrate Love with Restaurant Dinners

If you're unsure about Valentine's Day plans, head out for dinner—it's a surefire hit. More Dutch couples are choosing restaurants, with Eet.nu data showing double reservations on February 14 rising steadily from 2016 to 2019. Love truly goes through the stomach these days.

Which restaurant and where?

Options abound, but tapas tops the list for romance. Eet.nu research highlights the allure of Spanish ambiance, sangria, rioja, and shareable plates. Steakhouses, Greek, French, and Italian eateries also draw couples. In 2019, Haarlem, Utrecht, and Tilburg led for romantic dinners. With the upward trend and February 14 falling on a Friday, Eet.nu predicts even more diners in 2020.

Younger generations fueling the romance

This reflects a wider surge. Motivaction finds one in three Dutch now celebrate Valentine's Day—a record high. Millennials mark it at 44%, Gen Z at 47%. Food and drinks play a bigger role, with 40% spending on them versus 32% last year, reversing prior declines.
