Coca-Cola Debuts First Alcoholic Beverage in Japan: Chu-Hi Inspired Innovation

Coca-Cola continues to push boundaries with innovative products. After launching coffee-flavored Coca-Cola in fall 2017 and Light Coca-Cola in four fruity variants, the brand has ventured into uncharted territory: its first alcoholic drink. Crafted specifically for Japan, where Chu-Hi—sweet, low-alcohol beverages sold in vending machines—are immensely popular, this drink blends white distilled spirits, carbonated water, and flavorful sweeteners to deliver 3-8% alcohol by volume.

Exclusively for the Japanese Market

Available in flavors like green apple, lemon-lime, and peach-plum, the beverage reflects deep market insight. Jorge Garduño, President of Coca-Cola Japan, explained: "We have never launched a product that contains a little alcohol, and this is proof that we continue to explore new opportunities that move away from our very essence. […] This is a new experience specially created for our market." This Japan-exclusive offering highlights Coca-Cola's adaptability, even if it sparks mixed reactions elsewhere. Local consumers are embracing this fresh twist.
