We waste food for these 4 reasons

Have your containers ready! Waste-free Week starts on 7 September. A week in which everyone can take up the challenge to throw away less food. If we throw away less food together, it has a huge positive effect on the earth. The number 1 solution to climate change is wasting less food. Anti-waste app Too Good To Go researched food waste in people's homes and found several reasons why we waste food. How is it at your house? We'll help you with tips to prevent it this week (and beyond!).

Why do we throw away food?

Too Good To Go's research reveals several reasons why people throw food in the trash. These are the most mentioned:

  • 34% of the Dutch state that they throw away food because they think it is too little to keep.
  • 1 in 4 people never eat expired products.
  • 20% often scoop up too much food, after which it ends up in the bin.
  • Finally, 14% of people also indicate that they often do not finish their food in a restaurant. Sin!

You can do this this week

A little leftover? For example, you can make a delicious rice pudding from the last bit of rice.
Do you know the difference between a best before and before use date? Best before date stands for 'best before' (with an emphasis on 'at least') and is found on the label of products that do not spoil quickly. Has the best before date expired? Look, smell and taste to find out if you can still eat it. TGT stands for 'use until'. The date on it is the last day on which you can still use the product. So you really have to be careful with this.
Do you often make too much pasta or rice and your plate is full of a huge mountain again? A free eating buddy from The Nutrition Center helps to cook to size and even has a notch at the bottom to measure the size of enough spaghetti.
Have you been given too much food in a restaurant? We cannot repeat it often enough. It's really not a bad idea to ask the staff for a doggy bag.

If the whole of the Netherlands does not waste anything at home during the Waste-Free Week, this will save 11.5 million kilos of good food per week.
