Sweet and sour chicken from the slow cooker

A tasty sweet and sour chicken from the slow cooker. I've waited too long to prepare this, what a treat. And so simple to prepare! Maybe you have made your own sweet and sour chicken before (instead of from a jar), then you know that the homemade version is just as tasty. This time I made the sweet and sour chicken in the slow cooker, but of course you can also make it in the pan.

I make the sweet and sour chicken with pineapple, there are of course more variants for the slow cooker, but this one is the most famous. The slow cooker recipe below is sufficient for 4 people.

Ingredients for this slow-cooker chicken dish

  • 2 onions
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 spring onion
  • 1 orange bell pepper
  • about 75 ml apple cider vinegar
  • a large tablespoon of chicken spices (for example, the Portuguese chicken spices from Euroma)
  • can of pineapple (a small can is enough for us)
  • 500 grams of frozen peas
  • chicken fillet (2-3 pieces)
  • rice
  • small teaspoon sambal
  • little sweet soy sauce

Hint: If you prefer to work with even more vegetables in your sweet and sour chicken from the slow cooker, you can add broccoli, for example, which is also very tasty!

Cooking sweet and sour chicken in the slow cooker

  • Chop the onions and garlic
  • Cut the red and orange bell pepper into pieces
  • Cut the chicken breast into pieces
  • Marinate the chicken beforehand in a bowl with the chicken spices
  • Add everything to the slow cooker
  • Then add the pineapple chunks and a little juice
  • add sambal and dash of soy sauce

When all this is in the slow cooker, you can cook this sweet and sour chicken on low in 4 hours. Apart from the little pineapple juice you add, you don't have to add any juice, enough comes out of the vegetables for a nice, firm sauce. If you add more moisture, your sweet and sour chicken will probably become too watery, which would be a shame.

  • Before you eat, just cook the rice according to the preparation method on the package.
  • At the end, cut the spring onion into thin rings and spoon them over this slow cooker chicken dish as a garnish!
