How to Flavor Your Homemade Vinegar Easily?

You made your homemade vinegar, but you want to give it a little something extra by flavoring it with an ingredient (or several) of your choice?

Well it is possible, and not very complicated. I'll explain everything to you!

Following my recently published tip that explains how to make homemade vinegar, I guess the temptation is great to go further and flavor it with various flavors.

I show you how to go about flavoring your vinegar easily.

How to Flavor Your Homemade Vinegar Easily?

The choice of aromas

It depends of course on the taste of each:you can use aromatic herbs, fruits, vegetables but also flowers.

Whichever you choose, your ingredients must be washed thoroughly, well drained, and dried.

Unavoidable rules

Several rules must be followed to successfully flavor your vinegar:

- do not carry out this operation in the vinegar pot itself but in another container, otherwise you risk killing the vinegar mother and stopping the process,

- the chosen ingredients must be completely covered by vinegar,

- the container must be closed during the maceration time (between 15 days and 1 month),

- scald your container to clean it well before the operation,

- once your flavored vinegar is finished, keep it in a corked bottle.

3 sample recipes

You can imagine many possibilities for flavoring your vinegar, and the processes are pretty much the same. Here are 3 recipe ideas that you can adapt to your choices.

Mint vinegar

- Put 1 sprig of mint in 1 liter of vinegar.

- Leave to macerate for 3 weeks.

- Filter the vinegar (with a coffee filter for example) by pressing the mint leaves well to extract the substances.

To be enjoyed with a tabbouleh!

Lavender vinegar

- Put 100 g of fresh flowers in your vinegar.

- Leave to macerate for 1 month.

- Filter as above.

Use in salads and raw vegetables for a subtle flavor...

Raspberry Vinegar

- Take 500 g of raspberries from which the stem is removed and put them in 1 liter of vinegar.

- Leave to macerate for 10 days.

- Filter as before.

Add to poultry or red meat.

Bonus tips

- The more fragile the chosen ingredient, the shorter the maceration:the time will be shorter for flower petals than for thyme branches, for example.

- You can keep 1 year your flavored vinegar.

- You can also mix ingredients each other during maceration:thyme and garlic, mint and orange peel, ginger and mango...

It's up to you to experiment:for this, work on small quantities of vinegar (1/2 liter) and let your imagination run wild!
