My Homemade Pizza Margherita Recipe for Less than €1 per Person!

- 30 g of baker's yeast:€9.52 per kilo, i.e. €0.29

- 800 g of flour:€0.95 per kilo, i.e. €0.76

- 35ml olive oil

- 400ml of water

- 15g fine salt

The cost

Either a homemade pizza dough costing me €0.26 per person or at €1.04 for 4 people.

Preparation:20 min - Resting time:minimum 2 hours

1. Mix the yeast in 400 ml of lukewarm water.

2. Then pour the flour and salt on a work surface through a sieve to avoid lumps. Make a well in the pile of flour.

3. Pour the olive oil and the 400 ml of water containing the yeast into the well. Use a fork to stir the flour into the water.

4. Place the dough in a bowl or on a cutting board.

5. The dough will rise.

6. Once it has doubled in size, form a ball and roll it out on parchment paper with a floured rolling pin.

7. Give it a disc shape with a diameter of about 30 cm.

8. Leave the dough to rest for at least 2 hours.

Voila, your dough is now ready to be filled!

My dough is ready, now it's time to cover it with Mediterranean flavors.

Ingredients for 4 People

- 6 tomatoes:around 600 g at €1.45 per kilo, i.e. €0.87

- 2 balls of mozzarella:250 g at €5.76 per kilo, i.e. €1.44

- 1 onion:around 100 g at €1.85 per kilo, i.e. €0.19

- olive oil, salt &pepper

Either a garnish costing me €0.62 per person or €2.48 for 4 people.

Preparation:15 min - Cooking:15 min

1. Preheat the oven to 210°.

2. Peel and finely chop the onion then brown it in a pan with a drizzle of olive oil.

3. Wash, peel and cut the tomatoes into small pieces then pour them into the pan with the onions over low heat for 5 minutes. Stir occasionally.

4. As soon as the juice from the tomatoes has evaporated from the pan, the sauce is ready. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

5. Drain then cut the mozzarella into cubes or strips.

6. Spread the tomato coulis on the dough, place the mozzarella pieces and drizzle with a little olive oil.

7. Bake for about 15 minutes while watching the cooking:the mozzarella must be well melted and the crust golden brown.

Serve with a green salad!

The garnish costs me €0.62 per person or €2.48 for 4 people.

Bonus tip

While it may be tempting to buy ready-made tomato coulis in your supermarket, give preference to fresh tomatoes. Tastier, they will bring real flavor to your pizza.
